A fabric marker is a marker with specially formulated ink to permanently adhere to fabric. They also have specially designed tips to glide over fabric without skipping or bleeding unlike a marker designed for paper and other surfaces.
Do I need to prewash the fabric before decorating with fabric markers?
It depends. If your project is something that will be washed and dried afterwards, then it is recommended to prewash the fabric to avoid shrinking after. Prewashing also removes the sizing from new clothing, so the fabric absorbs the color better. But if your project is simply for display, then prewashing won’t make a huge difference in the end.
How long does it take fabric markers to dry?
For best results, it is recommended to let your fabric markers design dry flat for 24 hours.
How do you wash clothes after using fabric markers?
Machine wash clothes decorated with fabric markers on gentle cycle after 24 hours. Tumble dry low.
Can you wash off fabric marker?
Fabric markers contain permanent color that is designed to not wash out of clothing or fade over time. To remove fabric marker, apply hydrogen peroxide or your preferred stain remover to the area while the ink is still wet. After the ink has dried, the color will be permanent on the fabric. Rub the hydrogen peroxide into the fabric to loosen the pigment and pat dry. Repeat as needed to remove the ink and wash fabric. This will remove most of the color from the fabric.

How do you prevent fabric markers from bleeding?
To avoid having the ink bleed out when coloring, be careful not to stop or pause with the tip of the fabric marker resting on the fabric as the color will bleed out into it. If you find yourself hesitating, lift the marker off the fabric while you think about what you're doing.
The grain of your fabric also has an impact on how well a fabric marker works. A coarse grain or rough texture to a fabric means there are possible “bumps” the pen has to go over. A fine grain or smooth fabric is easier to work on. If in doubt, test the marker on a scrap bit of fabric or in an inconspicuous area.
To prevent ink from bleeding through the layers of the fabric, insert a shirt board or piece of cardboard between the layers of fabric to prevent the color to seep through fabric to the second layer of fabric as well as provide a stable decorating surface.
