Spread good vibes everywhere you go with a words of kindness T-shirt made even brighter in spirit with tie dye! Craft Box Girls will show you how to create fun tie-dye quote art tees for everyone in the fam with Tulip Two-Minute Tie Dye and Dimensional Paints. It’s the perfect project for adding some smiles to your day – and everyone else’s – every time you wear it!
What you need:
Tulip Two-Minute Tie Dye Kit of choice
- Tulip Puff Paint of choice
- White 100% cotton T-shirts
- Pencil
- Cardboard
- Disposable plastic surface cover
- Words of kindness quote
To kick off your words of kindness family T-shirt project, first wash the shirts (without fabric softener) and leave damp. Cover your work surface with a disposable plastic surface cover.
You can choose any tie-dye technique you want for this project! (This will be the background for your words of kindness quote, but don’t worry, any tie-dye pattern will work.) Craft Box Girls went with a spiral tie-dye pattern. To do this, lay your damp shirt out flat, then pinch it in the middle and twist the entire shirt until a spiral is formed.
Secure the shirt with rubber bands according to the technique. For spiral as shown, crisscross three rubber bands to create six wedge shapes on the bound shirt.
Prep your dye bottles according to instructions, then add tie dye to the bound T-shirt. For spiral, you can add as many as six colors – one per wedge – or as few as one color. It’s up to you! Then flip it over and repeat adding dyes in the same pattern on the other side.
Before placing your dyed project in the Two-Minute Tie Dye Container, it’s SUPER important that you make sure all areas of the shirt are still very damp. If any part has started drying out, spritz with water to re-dampen. Then place into the container and process in the microwave, let set and launder according to instructions.
After your tie-dye shirts have been washed and dried, it’s time to add words of kindness to them! Lay the shirts out flat and place a piece of cardboard into each shirt to hold it stable while you paint, and to prevent any paint from soaking through to the back side. If you don’t feel comfortable freehand painting, you can use a pencil to lightly sketch out your quote onto the shirts first.
Next use your Tulip Dimensional Paints to trace over your words of kindness in any colors you like!
Once you’ve finished making your words of kindness pop with dimensional color, let the shirts dry flat until the paint is completely dry.
